| NHS number | A unique ten-digit identifier assigned to every patient registered with the NHS, linking records across all NHS settings | "The nurse asked for his NHS number to open the hospital record." |
| Informed consent | A patient's voluntary agreement to undergo a procedure or investigation, given after a clear explanation of what it involves and any risks | "The nurse explained the MRI and obtained informed consent before proceeding." |
