VOCABULARY - 10 TERMS
| Term | Definition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wound | A break in the skin, here from a minor procedure, being monitored as it heals. | "The nurse checked the wound at today's appointment." |
| Dressing | The covering, gauze, film, or pad, placed over a wound to protect it and support healing. | "I'll apply a fresh dressing before you leave." |
| Stitches / sutures | Material used to close a wound edge to edge while it heals. | "The sutures will be removed once the wound has closed." |
| Staples | A metal alternative to stitches for closing a wound, removed the same way. | "The staples are due to come out on Thursday." |
| Sterile technique | A general procedural approach to keep anything non-sterile from touching the wound bed. | "I'll use a sterile technique while I redress the wound." |
| Granulation tissue | The pink, slightly bumpy new tissue that appears at a wound bed as it heals well. | "There's good granulation tissue forming already." |
| Exudate | Fluid produced by a healing wound; normal in small amounts, worth monitoring if it changes. | "A small amount of exudate is completely normal at this stage." |
| Healing well | The everyday phrase clinicians use to reassure a patient the wound is progressing as expected. | "Everything here tells me it's healing well." |
| Sign of infection | Any of the qualitative changes — redness, swelling, unexpected discharge — that prompt a same-day check. | "Come back straight away if you notice any sign of infection." |
| Removal date | The specific day, agreed in advance, when stitches or staples are due to come out. | "Let's fix your removal date before you go." |
